Yesterday, I finally got to see the movie, Eat, Pray, Love. If you’re a woman with a pulse, you should go see this movie. It’s incredibly enlightening and encouraging and truly makes you realize that the only person that can validate your happiness is yourself. What makes you happy is up to you and anything that you want in life can be yours once you make the decision. It gives you great perspective on life, love, societal views on what is “acceptable” and what’s not. Very smart movie. It’s not necessarily happy go lucky or even happily ever after. But it is real enough to make you realize that everything will be fine. So don’t stress it. I’ve realized that 80% of the stuff we get caught up in is not life. It’s not living. Living is experiencing candidly, willingly and knowingly while adding and contributing to your happiness. And if you’re not living life then you’re not doing something right. If the end result is not happiness, then it is without purpose. (MATTIE MEMO: Let’s be clear. My happiness is not your happiness. So don’t let mine offend yours.) I’m now very interested in reading the book. Below are 12 things I learned from the movie based on the direct quotes and lines. Thought I’d share.

“Having a baby is like having a face tattoo. You wanna be fully committed.”

“It’s unnerving when a stranger sees you more clear than you see yourself.”

“Everything falls apart. The only thing in life that is permanent is family.”

“Americans know entertainment. Not pleasure.”

“I’m not interested in being obese, I’m just through with the guilt.”

“Ruin is a gift. Ruin makes the world go ’round.”

“You don’t have to make children or be married to have a family.”

“You have to select your thought like you select your clothes everyday. That’s a power that you cultivate.”

“God dwells within you.”

“When you lose balance, you lose power.”

“The only way to heal is to trust.”

“What you are is not what you do.”

In the latest scandalous internet gossip, a certain promiscuous video vixen has created a video not only exposing her relations with a young Southern rapper, but also the fact that he’s drug addict. I’m not naming names because well, this isn’t that kind of site. (And we already know who.) The point I’m trying to make or better yet the question I’m trying to ask is: why do we even entertain this type of news? Why are these types of people even of any relevance to our sufficient lives? Is it because we like to see the rich and beautiful fall and fail? I mean, really. What’s the point of all this?

I feel like this kind of behavior and news is so redundant that it’s not even phasing anymore. I get it because I’m just like any other woman. I have emotions and I like pop culture. So when I hear that this-person is dating that-person who is still married to the-other-girl my predictable “oooooh” reaction is as genuine as you might expect. But after the 3rd or 4th time, my “oooooh” has politely and inevitably become a silent shaking of the head because I’m completely over it. We glorify these reality stars who we’ll forget next year, laugh at attempted suicide from the fallen American Idol and we applaud the the award winning singer’s philanthropic work even though she’s a pregnant “homewrecker.”

So is this what our generation has come to? Aimlessly playing in internet traffic? Are our lives so plain that we get off on the unacceptable behavior of the famous people? We’re so quick to judge and throw our used to be favorite singer under the bus because she took somebody else’s man. And let’s be honest, we all know (or are) someone who’s been in a very similar, if not same exact situation before. So what makes them so different? Because they’re under the new media microscope?

Here’s my issue. Am I okay with what any of these people are doing? Absolutely not. Am I even in a place to judge? Of course not. My issue is that we care too much. We’ve become people with breath, but have no depth. Look, history has proven that rock stars (which now include hip hop stars) partake in sex, drugs and rock & roll. Adultery has always and will always exist. And reality TV is a very effective mindless activity to use when you want to take a break from real life. But let us not excessively glorify or condemn these people. With the energy we use to do that, we could be going from good to great. From a 9 to 5 to our own office with our very own business. Instead of being in the world, we could be changing the world. I’m making the decision to stop caring about hoes, homewreckers and housewives because I prefer to be happy, healthy and hungry. Hungry for a life with endless possibilities that has nothing to do with who’s sleeping with who or whose multimillion dollar house is in foreclosure.

80% of the entertainment we watch and read is driven by malice and vanity. Vain pursuits are empty. And I don’t know about you, but I plan on living a full life.

Best known for his role on TNT’s Dark Blue, Omari Hardwick is an actor originally from Savannah, Georgia. He’s only been on the acting scene for the last 9 years and is already driving Hollywood – and the ladies – wild. he’s been in everything from CSI: Miami to Kick Ass. The star was just in The A Team and was recently cast in Tyler Perry’s rendition of For Colored Girls. I’m not too keen on guys with tattoos but with a face like that, I’ll make an exception. Be sure to check out Omari in Dark Blue on Wednesdays at 9/8c on TNT.

September is right around the corner and that means that fall is just down the street. But don’t fret you can still reach your goals and look the part. Here are 5 ways you can fall forward:

MAINTAIN YOUR BODY
Look just because summer is over, doesn’t mean it’s time to toss out the gym membership. With occasions like Halloween and Thanksgiving coming up, those extra workouts here and there are essential. Plus, maintaining your physique throughout the fall is way better than trying to lose all the weight you gained come spring.

SHOP EARLY
Depending on where you live (I’m here in Atlanta where it doesn’t cool down until the end of October) you want to get a head start on your fall and winter shopping. If you see great boots and a fabulous peacoat you know you’ll definitely wear, go ahead and get it. But only shop early for the classics – a trench coat, cardigan, etc. Trendy pieces are always available. It’s the pieces that you’ll wear for seasons to come that you want to get early. If you’re really focused, start picking up things for Christmas as well. You’ll soooo thank yourself later.

OUTLINE 2011
Just like that, 2010 is almost over. So if you know there is a trip you want to take, a party you want to throw or something that you want to do ,then move forward with. Book that flight, make that reservation and get to planning. Send out save the date cards and do whatever it takes so when 2011 does come around, you’re not scurrying to get things done. If you have the opportunity now, take advantage of the time and save yourself some in the future.

FALL CLEANING
You know the term “spring cleaning”? Well the same applies for the fall. Get your house ready for the fall and winter seasons by tidying up. Get those Christmas decorations out of storage and put them in an accessible place so you’re not suffering to do so in the middle of November. Bust out your sweaters, jackets and coats that you had stored away and put up your summer frocks. If you’re into interior design, change the color of your drapes, tablecloths and flowers to match the autumn season.

CLEAR YOUR VISION
Since we’re in the last quarter of the year, maybe there are some things you’d like to accomplish. There’s nothing wrong with creating a vision board for the end of the year. There may have been some plans you had that weren’t clear at the beginning of the year – when you’re typically “supposed” to make a vision board – that you have clarity on now. If you’ve got a mission, put it on a board and break it down. If you’ve got 3 months to lose 20 lbs for you cousin’s wedding in January, break it down to the month, then week and even the day. When you can see it, you can achieve it!

In this day and age, we all know someone who’s a publicist, manager, graphic artist, writer, or in some other field that you need. But before you hire that friend or make an “arrangement” is it wise to do business with a friend?

Look we are especially emotional with the people we love. These people usually include our friends. It’s easier to laugh with them, it’s easier to be mad at them, it’s easier to love them. When it comes to them, we tend to be hyper sensitive. This is why so many times, people say don’t live with someone you want to stay friends with. Same thing with business.

Here’s a piece of advice: emotions and money don’t mix. Especially when you’re trying to make some.

On one side, you feel like you shouldn’t have to pay someone at all or that you should be severely discounted because of the relationship. On the other side, they’re expecting to be paid regardless. Last time I checked, friendship doesn’t pay the bills. Friends usually tend to be comfortable with one another and it’s very easy to be comfortable with somebody else’s money. So when you work for your friend, you may take a longer lunch than you would if you were working a 9 to 5. You may take longer to get the job done or you may buy some extra stuff because it’s coming out of their pocket. But the question soon becomes: When did comfort and friendship become exchanged for incompetence and disrespect?

The moment you believed business with friends was a good idea, that’s when.

Why doesn’t friendship and business partnership usually work? Well because when you’re friends with someone, you usually look at them as you’re equal. It’s not like a teacher/student or parent/child relationship. The dynamic of the relationship is equality and the many things you have in common. The moment that relationship is changed to boss/employee it may start out fine. But as the days go by, it’s slowly but surely tainted by your previous (and still present) equality of a friendship. So if you’re the boss and we’re friends, I’m kind of like the boss too, right?

Wrong.

It usually doesn’t end well. Harsh words are thrown loosely and most of the time they sting. Bad. So the friendship is disbanded and you end up hiring a complete stranger like you should have done in the first place. Relationships define other relationships, so if I’m the boss and you’re the employee a lot of times it’s hard to transition back to the normalcy and sameness of everyday friendship. And if I don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth or that I’m getting paid enough to do the work I’m doing for you, our business arrangement is just a ticking time bomb. It’s only a matter of time before it explodes in our face.

Now, don’t be mistaken. It’s definitely easier or much more likely to be become friends with someone you work with or work for. When it’s this way around, the non emotional part is already established and usually nobody gets hurt. But that’s only because it was established in the beginning.

So should you do business with friends? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

After 40 years of ESSENCE here in the US, why is there no ESSENCE Africa?

So not too long ago there was a campaign for Vogue Africa. After a valiant effort made by Cameroonian photographer Mario Epanya, Conde Nast turned down the proposal. So, then a thought occurred to me: Why is there no ESSENCE Africa? After 40 years, you would think there would be some sort of effort put towards that. Here are 3 reasons why I think that an ESSENCE Africa would serve a better purpose and actually have a chance.

CELEBRATED, NOT TOLERATED. As long as ESSENCE has existed, it has always been unapologetically for the Black woman. Now, I’m no expert, but if I’m not mistaken you won’t find more Black women anywhere on Earth other than Africa. The publication could expand its audience globally and tap into the African fashion and beauty market that’s so often overlooked. ESSENCE has always done its best to serve the Black woman with substantial advice, great buys and celebrity features that are so easily related to here in the US. Africa is craving for the same material, if not more. Many times, the Black woman can’t get everything they need from a Western or European magazine. They seem to be more “mainstream.” ESSENCE Africa could serve as a platform for African women – from their dating and social issues to the designers they like to wear.

WHY NOT AFRICA? I mean this question could be asked to Conde Nast as well, but why wouldn’t ESSENCE want to expand their legacy to Africa? It would help make them global and they would capture the Black woman in totality – instead of just the US. There’s such a void in African publications solely for women that ESSENCE would marvel across the board. People would certainly buy it, and the truth is, products from the US do extremely well when they make their way to Africa. ESSENCE would be no different. The continent alone has over 50 countries but even if it was only in the top 10 countries like Nigeria and South Africa, they would easily triple their readership.

GLOBAL EXPANSION. Across the globe, job opportunities are anemic. ESSENCE Africa would help Black writers and editors at a vast scale. Sure, it’s not ESSENCE’s responsibility to employ every single writer of color, but it sure wouldn’t hurt the Black writer community. So many times, we vent about the opportunity to showcase our talents to the world and ESSENCE Africa would be doing just that. Literally. As a Black writer…stylist…editor…expert…whatever have you, it’s hard enough to find a place here in the US and we have numerous outlets. Think about how enlightening this could be for the African writer community: Serving up a magazine that has credibility within the Black community and bringing it to the Blackest place on the planet…Africa. It doesn’t get any better than that.

I know. Why is Diddy my motivation to run a marathon? Well, I’m not sure if you remember, but not too long ago Diddy Ran the City. Literally. So, I’m going to do the same. (If he can do it, I sure can.) Except it won’t be NYC, but instead Miami on January 30, 2011. I’ll be running for Team Shahid. Shahid Burns recently lost his battle to DSRCT – a rare form of sarcoma cancer. But it wasn’t without a fight and he loved to run and the weather of Miami. So, I’m not doing it for me. But instead for Shahid.

For more information on how to join the team, please visit the official Team Shahid website.

Went bowling on a Friday night at Midtown Bowl in Atlanta with Hubs and friends. We paid hourly and as time was running out it was my turn and my ball wouldn’t come out fast enough. You’ll hear, they started yelling at me to grab a ball so I just took a random one. It didn’t matter though, because I still got the job done. And turns out, I’m actually not that bad at bowling. However, I was still last place. LOL.
Lance Gross is a 29-year old actor known for his role on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. The Howard graduate turned down a professional track and field career to pursue acting. He’s been on HOP since 2007 and has starred in Our Family Wedding with America Ferrera. He’s also known for his relationship with Eva Marcille from America’s Next Top Model. The two dated and were briefly engaged before amicably splitting earlier this year. Why he’s likable? Well, look at him. That’s a gooooooooood face. His body isn’t bad either. Check out more pics of Lance below.
