Mattie Myth: Buying Smaller Clothes Helps You Lose Weight

We all know someone who’s done it and have even walked down that road ourselves. Buying smaller clothes to help our “I’m losing weight for real this time” initiative. The truth is, you’re wasting your money. The smartest buy is ALWAYS to buy clothes that actually fit you NOW and to get those pieces adjusted (tailored, taken in, etc.) once you’ve lost the weight.

Trust me. I really want to believe myself when I say I’m going to shed a few pounds to fit into a certain dress for a certain occasion. But the truth is, it doesn’t always happen in time. And then you have this dress hanging in your closet that’s obviously too small for you, taunting you about not achieving your goal. It’s just not healthy. Physically or mentally.

We’re all different shapes and sizes – no better, no worse. The best thing we can do is find what works best for our body type at the time being. Not what we’ve been before or what we aspire to be but again – AT THE TIME BEING.

Think about it: the woman across the room – you know the one who doesn’t have a hair out of place, has shoes on you would kill for and an outfit you’re assuming you can’t afford because it’s so impeccable. That woman for at least the first 30 seconds you see her has no age, no size, no race, no social class or anything: the only that matters is that she looks amazing. That’s the way you should dress. Whether you’re a size 2 or size 12, dress in a way that makes every woman want your outfit regardless of size.

When it comes to losing weight – I have no medical expert advice – but I do believe you should do it for the right reasons. Are you losing weight due to health reasons? To feel better? To get in shape? Because you think you’ll look better in clothes? Set goals and don’t jump on the fad diet bandwagon. Alternate your lifestyle (what you eat and what you do daily) to transition into the size you want to be.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret, getting smaller doesn’t guarantee you’ll look better in clothes if you don’t know how to dress for your size. What looks good on an athletic build won’t necessarily look good on a curvy body type or even petite figure. Know your body before changing it and celebrate it in both cases. Highlight the great parts and work on the parts you’re not totally satisfied with. But being completely unhappy about your entire body and dillusionally buying clothes that you’ll never fit in won’t fix anything.

At the end of the day, the greatest accessory you can wear that fits us all is confidence. Look yourself in that mirror and be honest with yourself. Not every trend is our friend, but if we select pieces that fit our body type (not too tight, not too loose) then our body image will become a lot healthier. Not just for us, but everyone else as well.

  1. Great advice Mattie “–> getting smaller doesn’t guarantee you’ll better in clothes if you don’t know how to dress for your size.”! I am guilty of doing this. I have a pair of jeans that are way to small but I’ve been so focused on just trying to fit those jeans. I agree, knowing how to dress your size is very important.
