Mattie Mention: Jennifer of Belle de Couture

When I first visited Jennifer’s blog, Belle de Couture, I was an instant fan. Her vintage looks are addicting and she finds some of the best designer thrifted pieces out there. Whether she’s on the beach or donning her favorite hue of pink, her style is always effortless chic with a mix of high and low pieces. I got the chance to ask the Florida blogger some questions and get to know her better. Find out the top three pieces in her closet and her trick to looking great in pictures…

You always have on the cutest outfits, full of bright bold colors. How did you come into your own personal style?
Thank you very much. I’d like to think my style is still evolving each day, but I’ve always been a fan of bright and bold colors. When I’m thrifting, I always keep my eyes open for bright colors and bold prints! My style definitively stems from my Grandmother Marjorie Farren. She always had the best ensembles – just full of bright pops of color! She always dressed to the nines, whether she was going to church or the grocery store. I like my style to always be polished or put together in its own way. Meaning, accessories and handbag that compliments the entire outfit… with fabulous shoes to match, but of course! :)

So what exactly does Belle de Couture mean and why is it the name of your blog?
Belle de Couture is basically a mix of English, Spanish, and French…silly combo, I know! “Belle” is defined as “Beautiful” in French, but in English a “Belle” is often referred to as a southern lady that is very put-together. I’m from the South, so I thought it appropriate to use “Belle” in my blog title. “De” means “of” in Spanish, and “Couture” is most often associated with “fashion.” When you put it all together, it pretty much stands for “The beautiful girl of fashion” or “beautiful fashion.” I had never heard of the phrase, and I wanted my title to be unique, yet catchy. I think it suits my blog very well.

It’s obvious you have a great personal style yourself, but who do you look up to as far as style is concerned?
Well, as stated above, my Grandma Farren will always been my number one fashion icon. However, I do have a lot of muses that I am inspired by. In fact, I have a lot of them listed on the side-bar of my blog. My top faves would have to be Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Erin Wasson, Nicole Richie, Gillian Zinser, and Poppy Delevigne.

What’s your favorite part about blogging?
I love the connections I’ve made with other bloggers around the world. It’s really cool to share the same passion with so many people. We all inspire each other with our own unique sense of style. Sometimes we even mimic one another’s looks… but that’s what makes fashion so fun! It should be about experimenting with different styles and trends. Fashion shouldn’t be taken so seriously.

What are the three best items in your closet?
That’s a real tough question, as I’m an indecisive person, haha. If I had to narrow it down to my three fave vintage pieces it would have to be: 1.) A vintage Chanel chain belt that I picked up for a $1.99 at the Goodwill in Venice, FL. 2.) A vintage leopard clutch my Grandma Farren gave me… it’s so incredible! 3.) A vintage Hermès scarf I picked up while thrifting for under $5. Narrowing it down to just three is super tough because I am such a vintage collector, and I’ve been so lucky to find some ah-mazing designer vintage pieces.

If you could only shop one place for the rest of your life, where would it be and why?
The Superthrift store in Largo, FL, without a doubt!! This place is the Mecca when it comes to thrift stores. I have purchased some of the most fabulous vintage pieces there, and for CHEAP! It’s hands down my favorite place to vintage shop. If I had to choose one other place (for those that don’t live in the Tampa Bay area) it would be Goodwill. I’ve found great things at Goodwill’s around the country. You just can’t beat it!

You’ve got great hair and skin. Take us through your daily beauty regimen.
My daily beauty routine is uber simple. I’ve always been a girl that’s more into clothing, shoes, and accessories over beauty products. However, I am highly obsessed with pink lipsticks or lipglosses. I can’t go a day without coating my lips in them! My number one beauty tip: ALWAYS was your face when you wake up and before you go to bed. It’s so important and so good for your face. Each morning I wash my face with a Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub, and I use the Olay Prox rotating scrub brush to get a deep down clean. At night I wash my face with Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser. I use Clean & Clear’s Morning Burst lotion on my face each morning. If I have super dry lips or dry skin anywhere on my face, I apply a little dab of Aquaphor (you must pick some up if you don’t own some, it has SO many uses other than dry lips or skin). I’ve been using Almay Clear Complexion foundation for years, I love the light feel and it contains a small amount of salicylic acid to help keep my face blemish free. If I have any blemishes that need to be covered up, I follow up with Almay Clear Complexion concealer. I finish by applying Neutrogena Skin Clearing Mineral Powder on my face with a brush. I don’t have a particular blush that I cling to… whatever I can get my hands on I use. Currently I’m using a few by NYX Cosmetics that I blend together. My fave mascara of all-time is CoverGirl Lashblast. I tend to line my eyes with plum eyeliner more so than black liner because purple tones make my green eyes pop, but I do use Maybelline liquid eyeliner from time to time when I want a winged eye effect. Now down to the lips, currently my fave lipsticks are: Maybelline Colorsensational Lipstick in “Make Me Pink” and “Pink Freeze,” and CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in “Enchantress” and “Hot.” Last but not least, I wash my hair with Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner, and I use Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner along with Pantene Restore Beautiful Lengths Smoothing Balm. I tend to let my hair dry naturally, because I prefer the wavy “beach hair” look. Its keeps my routine short and super easy in the morning before work too!

What’s the trick to looking great in your outfit pictures?
That’s something I myself am still perfecting, haha! It takes time though. First it’s important to figure out what type of clothing looks best on your body. You should also try and be yourself in the photos, and pose in a way that is natural to you. When it comes to picture taking the best pictures are taken when the photographer is crouched down, rather than standing. This helps your legs to look their longest. It’s also good to have a camera that takes good photos. I use the Sony Nex-5 Digital Camera. It’s a DSLR camera minus all the complexity of most DSLR cameras out there. Another good tip? Try and make sure you take your photos at the right time of day. I try to take most of mine in the morning before the sun is too high. It allows for clearer shots and keeps the shadows out. The best shots are usually taken at sunrise or sunset. Always make sure that the sun is shining behind your photographer so the light shines upon you in the shot. Finally, always make sure you take as many shots as you can, you can delete the ones you don’t like later.

Here at the motto is “LIVE WHAT YOU LOVE”. How do you live what you love daily?
I think it’s extremely important to have your own sense of style identity and to wear what makes YOU feel happy versus what everyone else sees as the “latest trend.” Sure, I love a good trend now and again, but I won’t wear a trend if I’m not fond of it. I also won’t wear something that I feel doesn’t look good on my body. My style is without a doubt eclectic. I love mixing vintage with department store pieces. It’s fun and sometimes challenging, but it’s all about experimenting with fashion and figuring out what I like best on me. I wear what makes me feel good, and I love sharing my passion with all my blog readers. My goal is to inspire girls and guys to have fun with fashion and give vintage and thrift shopping a chance. :)
